If I see God as nothing more than a caricature of history or imagination I cannot do anything less than make myself my own ‘god’. And once I realize that in doing so my rendition of being a ‘god’ is embarrassingly inferior to the very caricature I am mimicking, I quickly come to realize that maybe the only thing that can be ‘god’ is a God. And if that is the case, I suddenly find myself hounded by the stunning reality that God is not a caricature.

A memorial is the touchstone that incessantly reminds us that in a world of decay, great things are not held only to history. For great things always arise in the midst of great decay, for that is what makes them great.

Easter is the one morning in all of history where the dawn came twice; once on the eastern horizon and again in eternity.

To forget is to render the pages of history as entirely blank, and the lessons of history as never taught.

When I visit the cemetery, I walk past hundreds, possibly thousands of stories now silenced. And I know that history ‘recorded’ holds the adventures that history ‘lost’ let's slip through its fingers. And I’ve thought that I need to live a life worthy of being ‘recorded’ so that the adventure that might help another never slips through the fingers of anything.

If our commitment to an agenda is so passionate that we will rewrite the history that does not support it, we have become a blind slave to a rogue agenda that will destroy us in the service of it.

Forgiveness brilliantly rewrites the script that we’ve penned to process the pain and betrayal of our histories. And while such a rewrite does not change history itself, it changes everything about our history.

The present leans toward referencing itself. History references everything.

The story of who you were will be told by the things that you accomplished. However, the greater story will be told by what you refused to accomplish.
