I would guess that somewhere around ninety percent of the stuff that we refer to as love is what we ‘want’ love to be, but not what we ‘need’ love to be.

If I can live without that which I seek, I have errantly chosen to seek something that is not worth seeking.

We repeatedly discard the very things that we ‘need’ in the maddening pursuit of that which we ‘want.’ And if this behavior persists, in the end we will stand holding neither.

What I ‘want’ for my life is often not what I ‘need’ for my life, although I feel that I ‘need’ to talk myself into making it a ‘want.

Because we don’t ‘want’ God in no ways means that we don’t ‘need’ Him. And if we confuse the two, we might get what we want but we will die for lack of what we need.

I tell myself that I am what I need. But it is quite evident that what I need is what I’m not. And the greatest thing I’m not is God.

Most everything that I ‘need’ can be found in most everything that I threw away in my mad rush to get everything that I ‘wanted,’ for the eyes of greed are blind to the treasures of life.

To give myself over in the service of others may mean that I will forfeit everything that I want, but it also means that I will receive everything that I need. And if I am not big enough to let go of the former, then I am not yet big enough to handle the latter.

Although it pains me, I must admit that I have never found what I ‘need.’ And I am in this place because long ago I took it upon myself to decide what I ‘want’ to need, verses surrendering to what I ‘need’ to need. And thankfully I have realized that God made Christmas everything that I ‘want,’ but more so He made it everything that I ‘need.
