To abandon the child ‘within’ means that the adult ‘without’ will be an adult in name only. And frankly, I can only name a handful of things that are that tragic.

I don’t necessarily bemoan tragedy. Rather, what I bemoan is our seemingly inbred refusal to be accountable to the choices we’ve made that have caused those tragedies.

For some of us, the greatest miracle of all would be to believe in miracles. Conversely, the greatest tragedy of all would be to believe that you can’t believe.

God’s absence in the carnage is due to one single rather unnerving fact; that at some time past He honored our request that He leave. And if we are not brutally honest with ourselves regarding that choice, it is we ourselves who have set the stage for the next tragedy.

Tragedy descends, and in the carnage our enraged cynicism screams ‘If there was a God, He would not have allowed this!’ And somehow we’ve conveniently forgotten that once upon a time He allowed us to tell Him to go away, and once upon that time we allowed ourselves to take Him up on that offer.

When I read the ghastly lines of tragedy darkly penned into my life, I turn and notice that the pen in my hand is wet.

I think that there’s some thread of stubbornness that runs within us that says that the greater the tragedy the less we are willing to let it stand. And that’s one reason why I believe in our ability to take the tragedy of a world gone astray and knock the legs out from under it.

In a very tragic kind of way, sometimes things have to be gone before I fully realize that they were ever there.

Authorship of anything apart from God is nothing more than a tragedy in the making.
