To think that ignoring something is to make it go away is to exercise some of the greatest imagination imaginable. And if there’s something that needs to go away, it’s that kind of imagination.

There’s not much that I can find in places where there is nothing to find. However, to avoid facing God I find myself spending a lot of time in those very places.

When we ask God to leave, He does so. And in the leaving, He takes everything with Him that is of Him. Consequently, that means that we invite in everything that is not of Him. And we might be wise to consider the nature of that invitation and if we really want to extend it.

If I worship the fact that I don’t worship anything, amongst other things what I’m worshipping is denial.

My first mistake is to humanize God. My second mistake is to hold those wretched human characteristics up against all of the majestic things that I sense God should be. The blatant discrepancy which is certain to ensue then allows me to not only justify my rejection of Him, it grants me unbridled permission to discount His existence altogether. And that third and final mistake is without a doubt the most costly of all.

To deny the battle is unwise. To believe that I can fight it without God is insane. To actually do so is suicidal. No wonder so many of us walk around looking like death warmed over.
