If I can’t quite figure out what an ego is, all I have to do is look for the thing that’s killing itself in the very act of feeding itself.

Sometimes the very things that we’re expending our lives to sustain are the very things that are killing our ability to live. And against our blind and frequently raging protests, these are the very things that God let’s die so that we can live.

The ‘death of me’ is most often caused by the ignorance within me that’s killing everything that God is doing around me.

How is that we can presume the authority to take a life when that life has no say in the taking? And as I ponder that, I’ve come to think that it’s less about taking the authority and more about the fact that somewhere along the way we’ve lost our respect for life. And if that’s truly the case, then what else are we killing?

The most dangerous thing we can do with intelligence is to let it speak without being both chastised and informed by wisdom. For if we let it speak without the constraints and forbearance of wisdom, we will destroy ourselves. And in doing so, we will be so caught up in our ‘intelligence’ that we won’t even realize that it’s ‘us’ that’s killing ‘us.
