If I’m concerned about why I’ve changed in the way I have, I might start by being concerned about the places where I’ve been.

And so the seasons turn, leaving the parting season holding out the sure and certain promise of the one to come. And if we are sufficiently naïve to refuse to relinquish the season that is passing, we will completely forfeit the promise of the one for which the passing season existed.

The fact that we can’t see the horizon in front of us is because we’ve focused on the carnage behind us. And if we face backwards long enough, we become convinced that the carnage behind us is the horizon in front of us.

Even if yesterday was wildly successful, I still don’t want to repeat it. Rather, I want to build on it.

Might we remember what God has saved us from in the past so that we might be saved from our fear of the future.

Tomorrow will be a culmination of all my today’s, not an escape from them.

More than likely, to fear the next moment is to project the last moment on a moment that’s not even happened yet.

My greatest hope regarding the future rests on the mistakes I’ve made in the past, for those are the most effective things I’ve got to build with.

To abandon the past is to throw away all of the elements that will build my future. And that creates a landfill I can’t afford to fill.
