Maybe being a hero is deciding to step up on behalf of another at great expense to oneself because that is the essence our humanity. And if such actions are heroic, maybe they are not heroic because we decided to embrace that essence. Rather, maybe they’re heroic because we chose not to reject it.

Go do something great today. Something that's not pounded out from the podiums of prejudice, or politics, or rank biases stealthy clothed in righteous garments. Go do something great that's rooted in an essential good so deep that such podiums are helpless to capture even the thinnest parts of it. Go do something great today that's so clean and so authentic that the only podium that you find yourself listening to is the pain of the person standing next to you.

The world is not mine for the taking. Rather, it is mine for the giving.

I think that my fear of being sacrificial is based on the assumption that I will give away far more than I could ever hope to get back. And while that assumption is blatantly wrong, maybe the greatest thing that I’m doing wrong is that I’m walking around with an assumption.

To sacrifice is to do for others what we need done for ourselves. But the greatest sacrifice of all is to know that in doing this for someone else, we have now forfeited this thing ever being done for us.

I only own something because someone somewhere sacrificed in order to create the situation where I have the opportunity to own it. And therefore, the more I own the more I owe.

I think we fear that if we give ourselves away we are certain to lose ourselves in the giving. And I would suggest that you cannot lose yourself in ‘giving yourself away.’ Rather, you lose yourself when you ‘squander’ yourself away.

We live in a world that has yet to understand that to get what I desire the most I must constantly be giving away what I desire the most.

True heroes know that the most heroic thing about being a hero is not letting anyone else know that you are one.
