I expend my days relentlessly attempting to design my life in a manner that is designed to meet the needs in my life. Yet, God did not design life to do that. Rather, He designed life to direct us to Him so that He could do that.

As utterly irrational as it might seem, the greed within me has the most limited vision I can possibly imagine as it has eyes only for the few things it doesn’t have, and it is completely blind to all the many remarkable things that it does.

Despite all of our incessant tinkering, we can’t manufacture the things we most desperately need. And if perchance we do, they will never be more than pathetically emaciated facsimiles that will leave us emaciated. And until we finally realize that we can only ‘find’ these things, we will never sense any compulsion to ‘find’ God.

Men can dig wells, but they can’t create water.

Christmas embodies everything that I need. However, everything that I need is often made up of a lot of stuff I don’t want.

What we ‘need’ tells us who we are. What we ‘want’ tells us who we want to be. Therefore, we pursue we what we ‘want’ because we don’t want to face who we are.

Sooner or later I will be faced with the fact that the world is helpless to meet my needs. And at that point, I will be left with two conclusions; that life is cruel or God is real.

If I think that what I need are the things that my hands craft, I will miss the fact that what I need are the hands of the God who crafted me.

We trust many things that can't be trusted because at some fundamentally primal level we desperately wish that there was, so we settle for what we cannot when right in front of us there's a God that we can.
