We desperately want to believe in something. To simply live out our lives believing in nothing is to live as if this thing we call life is filled with nothing but nothing.

I don’ know if we believe that things can’t be done. Rather, I think that we’re too fearful to believe that maybe they can.

If you can get others to believe that your random guesses are actual answers, they’ll never guess that you never understood the question in the first place.

Fear says that what God has called me to is blatantly impossible. Selfishness says that the cost is unacceptably prohibitive. My humanity harbors other lesser agendas that seduce me to my own death. And I would be wise to believe none of it.

If I let that which I hold to be true fall victim to a world that says it is not, I have in that action surrendered to the voices of those who know nothing of the truth other than to destroy it because it terrifies them. And if there’s one thing I should be terrified of it’s not the surrender itself, but the fact that in the surrender I have given the world permission to avoid the very thing that it should fear.

Maybe the real miracle in any miracle is our ability to believe that despite our own depravity, in the eyes of God we are worthy of a miracle.
