I cannot give you what you need because I am not enough of what you need. But I can point you to the God Who is everything that you need. And if you go to where I point you, you will need nothing. And is that not the point?

I am not ashamed of my God. But I am deeply ashamed of the fact that we have created a gospel that is far more of ‘us’ and far less of God. And more of ‘us’ is not anything that any of us need, but more of God is everything that we all need.

Some of the very things that we so desperately need are hidden in plain sight because we can’t understand how something so plain can contain something so powerful. But is that not the way that God most often shows up?

What makes us think that God is insensitive is that He refuses to give us what we ‘want’ in order to give us what we ‘need.’ And to somehow think that such an action is insensitive is to suggest that we are the ones who are insensitive.

The reason some of us struggle with Christmas is that it refuses to give us what we ‘want’ because it recognizes that doing so sacrifices that which we ‘need.’ And we can be confidently assured that Christmas will never stoop to such an atrocity as this.

You can’t draw water from an empty well. And the oddity of it all is that if I dug it, it’s going to be empty. Maybe that explains why I’m thirsty and why I can’t take a step without falling into some hole.

My limitations abruptly define the frighteningly negligible extent of my existence, yet my soul utterly perishes if bound by those very same limits. And does this not somehow evidence both the reality of and need for God?

Why in the world have we never found what we’re really looking for? Because what we need is often the very thing we won’t accept. And sadly, in turning away the God we need, we need to understand that we have chosen to live without everything we need.

The essence of true leadership is our willingness to leave wherever we might be in order to meet people wherever they happen to be.
