When I read the ghastly lines of tragedy darkly penned into my life, I turn and notice that the pen in my hand is wet.

It’s not saying something that’s been said a million times before. It’s saying something that’s been said in a way that feels as if it was missed a million times before.

If I’m going to write something that moves the masses and seizes one’s soul, I have to force myself to sit and watch life long before I ever attempt to sit and write about it. For without the watching the writing doesn’t matter.

To take a thought, to gingerly package it in a handful of words, and then to deliver it to a person for whom both the thought and the words within which it came are life-saving is writing at its best. Anything else is scribbling at its worst.

It seems altogether probable that we would live with far greater care if we realized that in living out our day we are in fact writing out our history.

Dare to write your life story in such a way that, if perchance, someone happens to read even a single sentence of it they will be compelled to take far greater care in the writing of their own sentences.

We must never forget that everything that we do pens yet another line on the pages of the lives who are watching us. And once those lines are penned, there’s no eraser with which to remove that which we wrote. Therefore, take time to pray before you pick up the pen.

The script of tomorrow is being written by the pen of today. And we would be wise to remember that the pen of today cannot erase anything written by the pen of yesterday.
