We all have a dream for what this life could be like. Christmas is God handing us everything that we need to make that dream a reality. The issue is, are we willing to take up ‘everything’ or let our dreams fall to ‘nothing.

The reason some of us struggle with Christmas is that it refuses to give us what we ‘want’ because it recognizes that doing so sacrifices that which we ‘need.’ And we can be confidently assured that Christmas will never stoop to such an atrocity as this.

God has placed Himself squarely within the confines of my confines so that within my reach there lays the very thing that I need to break me out of those confines. Therefore, if I remain confined, it may be because I don’t understand that I’m confined. And if I don’t understand that I’m confined, I can be certain that I don’t understand my need for God. And that is likely the greatest confinement of all.

If I errantly define myself by the limiting rubrics of a limited culture, I will not even begin to understand the slightest fraction of who I am. What I need to realize is that God does not work in fractions.

When it comes to what God’s doing in our lives, sometimes knowing everything kills everything. And if I kill everything, then knowing everything doesn’t matter.

It seems that our refusal of God evidences our belief in Him, for why would we need to refuse something that doesn’t exist?

You can’t draw water from an empty well. And the oddity of it all is that if I dug it, it’s going to be empty. Maybe that explains why I’m thirsty and why I can’t take a step without falling into some hole.

To think that God pens history solely as a retelling of ‘what was’ is to miss the extraordinary fact that history is God’s initiation to ‘what can be.’ And Christmas is one of the greatest moments in history which renders it one of the greatest invitations of our life.
