One cannot be greedy as long as he has pride. Greed will put Pride aside.

In unfavorable circumstances, kashays (anger-pride-deceit-greed) occur, and in favorable circumstances, more kashays occur. However, the kashays of favorable circumstances are cold. Those are raag kashays (attachment kashays) and they include greed and deceit. Whereas, in unfavorable circumstances, there are dwesh kashays (abhorrence kashays) such as anger and pride.

Control over anger-pride-deceit-greed is known as saiyam. Saiyam, in turn has two parts; in one, there is presence of anger-pride-deceit-greed but they are controllable; they do not harm the other person to the slightest extent. The other saiyam is like 'ours' [the Gnani's]. There is absolutely no anger-pride-deceit-greed at all in that. It not only does not harm the other person, but it also does not harm one's own self.

Actually, on the path of liberation, One attains saiyam (a state in which there is absence of anger-pride-deceit-greed, attachment and abhorrence) from the Gnani Purush, and through that saiyam, liberation is attained. Without saiyam, there is no liberation.

One may even have ‘greed’ for self-respect. Greed gives rise to circumstances. When circumstance arises, worldly life arises.

Where there are kashays (anger-pride-deceit-greed), there is worldly life. As long as anger-pride-deceit-greed exist; one is a sansaari [living a worldly life] regardless of whether one is an ascetic or a family man. And where anger-pride-deceit-greed are absent, one is regarded as being asansaari [non-worldly], be he an ascetic or a family man.

It is called saiyam [inner control] when anger-pride-deceit-greed are under control. However those who renounce are not called saiyami [those with inner control]; they are called ‘tyagi’, one who renounces worldly life.

The kashays (inner anger, pride, deceit and greed) that keep one entrenched in the coolness of the worldly life are the very thing that makes one wander life after life.

Your anger, pride, deceit, and greed should be such that they hurt no one. If they are limited to where they only hurt only you and no one else, then the path of liberation is open.
