Ich frage mich, ob die Erinnerungen für uns Menschen nicht der Kraftstoff sind, von dem wir leben? Ob diese Erinnerungen wirklich wichtig sind oder nicht, ist für das Weiterleben nicht von Bedeutung. Sie sind nur der Brennstoff.

You can hide memories, suppress them, but you can’t erase the history that produced them

There are some things we can never assign to oblivion, memories we can never rub away. They remain with us forever, like a touchstone.

They had stolen my memories from me! Nobody had that right. Nobody! My memories belonged to me. Stealing memories was stealing time. I got so mad, I lost all fear. I didn't care what happened. I want to live! I told myself. I will live. I will get out of this insane netherworld and get back my stolen memories back and live. Forget the end of the world, I was ready to reclaim my whole self.

Writing from memory like this, I often feel a pang of dread. What if I've forgotten the most important thing? What if somewhere inside me there is a dark limbo where all the the truly important memories are heaped and slowly turning into mud?

Memory is like fiction; or else it's fiction that's like memory. This really came home to me once I started writing fiction, that memory seemd a kind of fiction, or vice versa. Either way, no matter how hard you try to put everything neatly into shape, the context wanders this way and that, until finally the context isn't even there anymore... Warm with life, hopeless unstable.

That's what the world is , after all: an endless battle of contrasting memories.

Here, too, a brand-new day is beginning. It could be a day like all the others, or it could be a day remarkable enough in many ways to remain in the memory. In either case, for now, for most people, it is a blank sheet of paper.
