Our life is made by the death of others.

That which can be lost cannot be deemed riches. Virtue is our true wealth and the true reward of its possessor; it cannot be lost, it never deserts us until life leaves us. Hold property and external riches with fear; they often leave their possessor scorned and mocked at for having lost them.

Nothing should be so greatly feared as empty fame.

Fine gold is recognized when it is tested.

He who does not value life does not deserve it.

You can have no dominion greater or less than that over yourself.

When that which loves is united to the thing beloved it can rest there; when the burden is laid down it finds rest there. There will be eternal fame also for the inhabitants of that town, constructed and enlarged by him.

Even the richest soil, if left uncultivated will produce the rankest weeds.
