We have created moral doctrines around decency and derive a great amount of satisfaction in punishing those who don’t comply.

A society with mystical explanations for most things and a society with explanations for all things (mystical or otherwise) are both badly constructed. A well-constructed society is the one that endorses non-mystical explanations for most things and accepts lack of capability and understanding regarding things that are not supported by solid observations and evidence.
