I believe in the great change that a girl with a big dream can bring to this world. I believe in giving girls a chance to activate their potential without fear.

I liked me, I knew me, I knew I didn't have to be beautiful to be worthy and it was much more valuable and interesting to have thoughts, dreams and plans to heal the world.

We see those years of negative treatment by men, by institutions, by the patriarchy, by society at large. We see it. We challenge it, we stand up to it, and we change it.

In the end I think change really does begin at home, at the dinner table, in spit seconds, in quiet determined moments.

There's an amazing feminist superhero called Audre Lorde who said, "Our feelings are our most genuine paths to knowledge." My nosedive into feminism was fueled entirely by feelings. In the years since, it has developed and grown into something far wordier, filled with thoughts, books, quotes, and plans for action; but at the beginning my feminism was just a feeling. My feminism was born with little context or language and a lot of emotion.

And this is when I realize that perhaps feminism isn't about being morally pure or well-liked, and is more about doing the damn thing. Maybe it's about being a women in her truth, fighting for her cause, her dreams, her vision and doing it exactly as she sees fit.

Our bodies are life-growers by nature, tied to the moon by some invisible, yet visceral cord. We get to walk through the world in bodies that are mysterious, majestic even, and our intuition as women is pretty off-the-charts.

And feminism is one again - as Billy would say - a Thing. It's a different thing. It's not appropriated by solemn, self-righteous intellectuals. It's every woman's now.

She has been taught - by the spaces we all occupy - that the experts don't look or sound like me; that they are older whiter and male.
