God has given fruits so that we can satisfy hunger. Similarly, He has given flowers so that they can be used if necessary. Just as the fruits are beautiful in the tree and also in the basket, likewise, the flowers are beautiful in the tree and also in the lover or beloved’s hands. I humbly disagree with those who say that flowers adorn only the trees. As leaving the fruits in the tree will destroy them, equally, if the flowers are not used, they will be pointlessly wasted!

Hunger, Red—to sate a hunger or to stoke it, to feel hunger as a furnace, to trace its edges like teeth—is this a thing you, singly, know? Have you ever had a hunger that whetted itself on what you fed it, sharpened so keen and bright that it might split you open, break a new thing out? Sometimes I think that’s what I have instead of friends.

In the evening I came home and read about the Messina earthquake, and how the relief ships arrived, and the wretched survivors crowded down to the water's edge and tore each other like wild beasts in their rage of hunger. The paper set forth, in horrified language, that some of them had been seventy-two hours without food. I, as I read, had also been seventy-two hours without food; and the difference was simply that they thought they were starving.

Nikita uzun süre tek başına dikildi karanlık odada, başkasının elemine engel olmaya utanıyordu. Lyuba onunla ilgilenmiyordu, çünkü kendi acısından duyduğu keder insanı bütün diğer acı çekenlere karşı duyarsızlaştırır. Nikita izin almadan yatağa, Lyuba'nın ayakucuna oturdu, francalaları koynundan çıkardı, bir yerlere sokuşturmak istiyordu, ama şimdilik bir yer bulabilmiş değildi.(Potudan Nehri / Dönüş)
