They were part of the ninth British expedition to Everest, led by John Hunt. The achievement brought Hillary immediate recognition and marked a turning point in his life as a mountaineer and explorer.\n\nBorn in Auckland on 20 July 1919, Hillary was educated at Auckland Grammar School and later at the University of Auckland. Before his career as a mountaineer and explorer took shape, he worked as a beekeeper. He went on to become a philanthropist, a diplomat, and a public speaker, and he also worked as an autobiographer, setting down his experiences in writing using the English language throughout his career.\n\nFrom 1985 to 1988, Hillary served as New Zealand's High Commissioner to India and Bangladesh, concurrently holding the position of Ambassador to Nepal. Over the course of his life he received a number of honours, including the Knight Commander of the Order of the British Empire, the Order of New Zealand, the Order of the Garter, the Polar Medal, and India's Padma Vibhushan. He died in Auckland on 11 January 2008, the city where he had been born nearly nine decades earlier. The Padma Vibhushan, one of India's highest civilian awards, stands as a reflection of the ties he maintained with the region he had served as a diplomat and that had been so central to his life as a mountaineer.","On 29 May 1953, Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest.
