Elmore Leonard, born in New Orleans on October 11, 1925, was one of those voices, working across novels, screenwriting, and film production until his death in Detroit on August 20, 2013.\n\nLeonard was educated at University of Detroit Jesuit High School and Academy, and he went on to write in two genres that often overlapped in his work: the Western and detective fiction. He wrote in English throughout his career as an American citizen, and his output as a novelist ranged across decades and settings. His novel Hombre placed him firmly in Western territory, while titles like LaBrava, Out of Sight, Freaky Deaky, and City Primeval showed his range within crime and detective fiction. Beyond the page, Leonard also worked as a screenwriter and film producer, extending his stories into other formats.\n\nThat body of work drew serious attention from the literary and crime-fiction communities over the years. Leonard received the Edgar Allan Poe Award for Best Novel, one of the most competitive honors in crime writing, as well as the Grand Prix de Littérature Policière, a French award recognizing outstanding crime fiction. He also received the Grand Master designation, a career honor in the mystery and crime-writing world given in recognition of a sustained body of work.\n\nBetween those three honors, Leonard's place within genre fiction was formally acknowledged on multiple fronts — domestically, internationally, and across the span of a career. The Grand Master, in particular, represents a kind of lifetime recognition from within the field itself, and Leonard received it having produced novels that crossed between Western landscapes and urban crime settings, written screenplays, and contributed to film production. His final years were spent in Detroit, the city where much of his crime fiction was rooted, and it was there that he died in 2013, the same year that recognition of his career continued to accumulate.","American crime and Western fiction of the twentieth century produced some of its sharpest, most distinctive voices during the postwar decades, as writers pushed genre storytelling toward harder edges and more grounded dialogue.
