R. Ewing, the scheming Texas oil baron at the center of the television series Dallas, became one of the most recognizable characters in American television history, and it was Larry Hagman who played him across the show's original run and into its 2012 revival.\n\nHagman was born on September 21, 1931, in Fort Worth, Texas, the son of actress Mary Martin. He attended Black-Foxe Military Institute, Trinity School, and Weatherford High School before going on to Bard College. His education fed into a career that spanned stage, screen, and television. He worked as a stage actor and earned a Theatre World Award before making his mark on the small screen. His first major television role came as Major Anthony Nelson on I Dream of Jeannie, a part that established him as a recognizable face in American households. From there, his career moved into film as well, where he worked as both an actor and a producer, and he also contributed his voice to projects as a voice actor.\n\nThe role that would define his public image arrived with Dallas, the prime-time soap opera in which he played J. R. Ewing, the manipulative and endlessly entertaining oil magnate. The character became a cultural touchstone, and Hagman's performance drew wide attention throughout the show's run. Away from the set, Hagman faced serious health challenges, undergoing a life-saving liver transplant in 1995. Despite this, he continued working and, in 2012, reprised the role of J. R. Ewing in the revival of Dallas, returning to the character that had made him famous.\n\nHagman also served as a television producer and television director during his career, taking on creative responsibilities behind the camera in addition to his work in front of it. He received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his contributions to the industry. He died on November 23, 2012, in Dallas, from complications of acute myeloid leukemia, the same year his final television appearance aired.","J. R.
