His first book of poetry, The North Ship, appeared in 1945, followed in quick succession by two novels, Jill in 1946 and A Girl in Winter in 1947. From 1961 to 1971 he contributed to The Daily Telegraph as its jazz critic, demonstrating the range of his critical interests beyond literature. He was also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and held the additional role of librettist.\n\nOver the course of his career Larkin received the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry, the Cholmondeley Award, the Russell Loines Award for Poetry, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire. He died on 2 December 1985 in Kingston upon Hull, the city where he had worked as a librarian.
