What is often missed is the fact that after David was anointed by Samuel he did not ascendto the throne immediately. He went back to the sheep he so loved (1 Samuel 16:19). He didnot dress in kingly robes or changed his speech or anything. In fact nothing changed. Hewas simply anointed. Time elapsed.
