As we stepped into the large mess hall, a band began to play "The Star Spangled Banner," and Old Glory was unfurled before us. I came undone. I couldn't help it; I began to sob. This was the first American flag we had seen in years. No one who had not experienced the past four years with us could understand what it meant to see that flag and hear that song.
