If you can train yourself to be actionable instead of reactionary, you will break out of the negative space that is typically furnished with fear, uncertainty and inaction, and move into that peaceful zone of determination, power, decisiveness and growth. Life will become less complicated.

There is considerable freedom attached to knowing and accepting who you are.

To lead is a privilege, not an entitlement. It doesn't make you better than anyone; it helps you bring out the best in everyone. Accolades don't inspire a leader's vision; they've set their sights on the success of others. Leaders bypass shortsightedness and focus on the big picture. Leaders who always stand righteously never stand alone.

When I talk about Legacy, Foundation, Purpose, these aren't just catchy titles I pulled out of nowhere for my book. These are principles that molded me.

Social Networking Reality Check: After you’ve met, reunited, scheduled, confirmed, celebrated and reminisced, re-boot and remind yourself that your closest friends are probably not even on FaceBook. Life’s most intimate personal details, insecurities, conflicts and “drama” should not play out on a public website. Your discretion, dignity and self respect should not log off when you log on.

As a writer I have a responsibility. As a father, a union organizer, a leader, a son, brother, uncle, friend…as a man… I have a responsibility to be honest, to be trustworthy and to be mindful that people rely on the things I say and do in so many ways.

When things do not go our way, we typically have two choices, either be controlled or take control.

I work every day to live my life in such a way that when I take my last breath, I will be satisfied I made a difference and I was an inspiration; that I left something behind that will be meaningful to society; I did not shame my family, disappoint my friends or ruin my good name.

Faith brings clarity. You stop asking why, and prepare for when. You accept that life's biggest disappointments can become the greatest blessings; when one door closes, another opens. When it does, step through fearlessly! If you walk in faith, you will not get lost.
