It’s not that love lacks power. Rather, it’s that we’re too frightened to submit to a power that will demand vulnerability when we’ve invested the whole of our lives building walls.

You know as well as I do that choosing to love another person is choosing to be hurt. However, is choosing ‘not to love’ actually choosing to be hurt simply because we will have chosen to keep a part of ourselves to ourselves that will die a most horrific death in the keeping?

To be strong I must first admit that I am weak. And that requires some of the greatest strength imaginable.

Vulnerability creates unimaginable space to build each other up, as much as it creates ample room to tear each other down.

Hating is the coward’s way of refusing to be vulnerable.

Love makes it all ‘not about me.’ And after having spent the whole of my existence making it ‘about me,’ that’s an ‘about-face’ that’s about as difficult as it can get.

It is our handicaps, whatever the nature of them might be that steel us against the shallowness of the world and keep us transparently authentic. As such, we should wish for more of them, rather than deny those which we have.

I would suggest that the desire to love is always greater than the passion to hate. It’s simply that love demands vulnerability and hate does not. Therefore, too often we tend to love the easier choice to hate.

If God created great things with a point of vulnerability, it would lie in the reality that great things die in the hands of great ignorance.
