The father who has selflessly poured himself into the life of his children may leave no other monument than that of his children. But as for a life well lived, no other monument is necessary.

The true test of a father’s legacy is that it rests in every life except his own, for to leave a true legacy we must divest ourselves of everything so that the investment in our families can be everything.

Someone, someday will ask who I was. And someone, someday will answer by saying, “Well, look at what he did”. And what I hope I ‘did’ was to leave behind a really good answer.

The only portfolio that matters is the one that I leave in people’s hearts.

It is my wish and most cherished hope that God would be pleased with my legacy, that lives would be changed by it, and that the world would be immeasurably better because I was privileged to leave a legacy at all. And if perchance I am fortunate enough to have these things come to pass, I can then rest in the fact that I have lived well.

It’s not dying I’m afraid of. It’s dying without ever having lived that I’m afraid of.

The greatest edifice that we can erect to ourselves is to give ourselves over to building the edifices within other people in a manner that they might carry a part of ourselves, but they look nothing like ourselves.

The story of who you were will be told by the things that you accomplished. However, the greater story will be told by what you refused to accomplish.

It’s not the specter of aging that haunts me. Rather, it’s the far greater fear of having aged and having nothing to show for the aging.
