Merkel was born on 17 July 1954 in Hamburg. She attended Polytechnic Secondary School in Templin and went on to study at Leipzig University, later pursuing research at the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Her occupations include physicist and chemist alongside her eventual work as a politician and statesperson, reflecting an educational path that moved through the sciences before she entered public life.

She rose through the Christian Democratic Union, leading the party from 2000 to 2018 and serving as Leader of the Opposition from 2002 to 2005 before winning the chancellorship.
