Anthony Burgess was born on 25 February 1917 in Harpurhey, Manchester. He was educated at Xaverian College and went on to study at the Victoria University of Manchester. A United Kingdom citizen, he published in English throughout his career.

Burgess worked across several disciplines. As a novelist, librettist, translator, and composer, he moved between literary and musical forms with considerable range. His novel A Clockwork Orange stands among his notable works. Alongside his fiction, he composed over 250 musical works, a body of output that reflects how seriously he took his life in music as well as letters.

In recognition of his contributions, Burgess received the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres and the Companion of Literature, two awards that marked his standing across different cultural traditions. He died on 22 November 1993, leaving behind a catalogue of novels, translations, libretti, and musical compositions that together trace a productive working life rooted in Manchester and extending far beyond it.

The country needs and, unless I mistake its temper, the country demands bold, persistent, experimentation. It is common sense to take a method and try it, if it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.

I'm a natural clown, I suppose, in writing, and one has to accept that; I can't do anything about it. I have written one or two novels which are not specifically funny. I wrote a study of Shakespeare which was not intended to be funny, but some people regard it as such.

I enjoy journalism; anybody does. You see the results immediately; you've got an immediate audience instead of having to wait for your audience as you do if you're writing a book, and you get a bit of money coming in, and you can see more clearly how you're paying the bills. But it's not a good position for the serious novelist to be in.
