In 1991, the Nobel Committee awarded its Peace Prize to a politician and writer who was, at that moment, unable to accept it in person. Born on 19 June 1945 in Yangon, Aung San Suu Kyi grew up to become a citizen of Myanmar whose work as a human rights defender drew international attention across decades of political turbulence.

Her education spanned several institutions across multiple countries, including the Convent of Jesus and Mary, the University of Delhi, Lady Shri Ram College for Women, St Hugh's College, and SOAS, University of London. She works in both Burmese and English. In 1988, she became general secretary of the National League for Democracy, and from 2011 to 2023 she served as the party's registered chairperson during the period in which it operated as a legal organization. Her political career reached its most prominent phase between 2016 and 2021, when she held the office of Minister of Foreign Affairs and served concurrently as State Counsellor of Myanmar. During those same years she was widely described as the de facto leader of Myanmar.

Her tenure in those roles ended in 2021. The 1991 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to her while she was unable to travel freely, remains among the most documented recognitions of her standing as a politician and human rights defender operating under the constraints of Myanmar's political environment.
