William John Evans was born on August 16, 1929, in Plainfield, New Jersey. He attended North Plainfield High School before pursuing formal musical training at Southeastern Louisiana University and later at Mannes College The New School for Music in New York City. Those years of study shaped a musician who would work across jazz, cool jazz, modal jazz, and post-bop — genres that, taken together, suggest both a classical sensibility and a restless engagement with the possibilities of improvised music. Evans built his career as a pianist, composer, conductor, and bandleader, roles that he held simultaneously rather than sequentially, and he worked in English-speaking musical contexts throughout his life as a United States citizen.
