Bill Gray
William M. Gray headed the Tropical Meteorology Project at Colorado State University's Department of Atmospheric Sciences, a research program that established him as one of the world's leading experts on tropical storms and a pioneer in the science of tropical cyclone forecasting.
Gray was born in Detroit on October 9, 1929. He pursued his education at the University of Chicago and later at George Washington University, building the academic foundation that would carry him into a long career as a meteorologist. His work eventually brought him to Colorado State University, where he served as a professor of atmospheric science and led the Tropical Meteorology Project, directing research into the behavior and prediction of tropical cyclones.
Gray retired from his faculty position at Colorado State University in 2005, though retirement didn't mark the end of his engagement with the field. He held the title of emeritus professor of atmospheric science at CSU and continued to be actively involved in climate change and tropical cyclone research right up until his death. Along the way he received the Jule G. Charney Medal, a recognition tied to his contributions to meteorology.
He died in Fort Collins on April 16, 2016, having spent his final years still connected to the research questions that defined his career. His role as head of the Tropical Meteorology Project at CSU remained the concrete institutional anchor of his professional life.
