Bob Brooks
Bob Brooks was an American film director, photographer, screenwriter, and advertising creative whose career spanned multiple countries and decades.
Born in Philadelphia on December 26, 1927, Brooks was educated at Pennsylvania State University. He went on to work across film, photography, commercial directing, and advertising, operating in the UK, the US, and Europe throughout his professional life.
Brooks directed several thousand television commercials in the UK, the US, and Europe, and also directed two feature films. Alongside that directing work, he pursued photography and screenwriting. He was a founding partner of BFCS and one of the founders of Design and Art Direction, the organization now commonly referenced by practitioners in the advertising and design fields. Throughout his career he received numerous international awards.
Brooks worked in English and held United States citizenship. He died in Berlin on September 27, 2012, at the age of eighty-four. His work ranged across commercial directing, photography, narrative filmmaking, and screenwriting, with his founding role in Design and Art Direction standing as a specific marker of his engagement with the broader creative industries.
