The American frontier of the late nineteenth century produced a distinct cast of figures who operated in the contested space between law enforcement and outlawry. Robert Ford, born on January 31, 1862, in Ray County, was one such figure, working as both an informer collaborator and a bounty hunter during a period when those roles carried considerable legal and personal risk.
Ford occupied an ambiguous position in the social world of his time. His work as an informer collaborator placed him in cooperation with authorities, while his occupation as a bounty hunter saw him pursue individuals for financial reward. These two roles were not uncommon in combination on the American frontier, where the boundaries between official law enforcement and private enterprise were frequently blurred. Ford was a citizen of the United States and conducted his affairs in English.
Ford died on June 8, 1892, in Creede, Colorado, having lived only thirty years. His death in Creede marked the end of a short life spent in occupations that brought him into direct contact with the violent and legally uncertain conditions of the frontier.
