The early 2000s saw a wave of anti-war activism sweep across the United States, with citizens from many backgrounds stepping into public life to challenge military policy. Cindy Sheehan, born on July 10, 1957, in Inglewood, California, became one of the more visible American participants in that movement.

Sheehan studied at Cerritos College and the University of California, Los Angeles. She went on to work as a peace activist, politician, and podcaster, operating in English as a U.S. citizen. Her work moved across more than one arena — direct political engagement through her career as a politician, sustained advocacy as a peace activist, and media work as a podcaster — giving her a presence in several overlapping areas of public life.

That range of activity brought her recognition from a number of organizations. Sheehan received the US Peace Prize, the American Peace Award, the Eugene V. Debs Award, the Thomas Merton Award, and Erik Bye's Memorial Prize. Taken together, these five honors reflect the breadth of attention her work attracted across different awarding bodies and, in the case of Erik Bye's Memorial Prize, across national boundaries as well.
