The 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid marked a period of intense international competition in speed skating, with athletes from the Soviet Union, the Netherlands, and Norway among the principal contenders. Eric Heiden, born on June 14, 1958, in Madison, Wisconsin, emerged from that competitive field as the most successful athlete of those Games.

Heiden had been educated at Madison West High School before going on to study at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He trained under coach Dianne Holum, competing as a long track speed skater. At the 1980 Winter Olympics, he won five individual gold medals, set four Olympic records, and set one world record across his events. He also delivered the Athlete's Oath at those Games. Beyond speed skating, Heiden competed as a road cyclist and track cyclist, an athletic range that would eventually earn him induction into the United States Bicycling Hall of Fame. After his competitive career, he pursued a medical education at Stanford University and Stanford University School of Medicine, going on to work as a physician.

The honors Heiden received reflect recognition across multiple domains of sport and public life. He was inducted into the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame and the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame. He received the Oscar Mathisen Award, a distinction in speed skating, as well as the James E. Sullivan Award, which is presented annually by USA Track and Field to an outstanding amateur athlete in the United States. These honors, taken together, document a career that spanned elite winter sport, competitive cycling, and ultimately a transition into medicine following his studies at Stanford University School of Medicine.
