Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh was born on 18 August 1920 in Lumding, a town in what was then the British Raj. He came of age during a period of sweeping political transition, living first as a subject of the British Raj, then as a citizen of the Dominion of India, and finally as a citizen of independent India — a trajectory that shaped the world in which he worked and wrote.
He pursued his education at the University of Delhi and went on to build a career that spanned several overlapping roles: poet, writer, translator, literary historian, critic, cultural critic, and academic. He worked in the Punjabi language throughout his career. One of his notable works is Na Dhuppe Na Chaanve. Over the course of his life he received a number of significant honours, including the Sahitya Akademi Award, the Saraswati Samman, and the Soviet Land Nehru Award. He was also elected a Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi, a distinction that marked his standing within Indian literary institutions.
Harbhajan Singh died on 21 October 2002. His career had taken him from Lumding through decades of literary and academic work conducted in Punjabi, leaving behind a body of writing that included poetry, criticism, translation, and literary history.
