James Whistler
James McNeill Whistler was an American painter, printmaker, and writer active during the Gilded Age who spent much of his career based in the United Kingdom.
Born on 10 July 1834 in Lowell, Massachusetts, Whistler received part of his education at the Imperial Academy of Arts before establishing himself across multiple visual disciplines, working as a painter, etcher, lithographer, and illustrator. He became associated with both the Aestheticism and Symbolism movements, and his output ranged widely in form and subject. Among his notable works are Whistler's Mother, Nocturne in Black and Gold – The Falling Rocket, Nocturne: Blue and Gold – Old Battersea Bridge, and The Peacock Room. He was also a writer who used the English language to engage with ideas connected to his artistic practice. For his contributions, he received the Officer of the Legion of Honour.
Whistler died on 17 July 1903 in Chelsea, London, just one week after his sixty-ninth birthday. His work across painting and printmaking consistently returned to themes associated with Aestheticism — the idea that visual art carries its own self-sufficient value — and with the atmospheric, symbolic qualities that link him to the Symbolism movement.
