Born in Mechanicsville, Virginia, on June 23, 1977, Jason Mraz attended Mechanicsville High School before going on to study at the School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community and later at Berklee College of Music, building a foundation as a singer, guitarist, mandolinist, and composer.
His debut studio album, Waiting for My Rocket to Come, arrived in 2002, and the single "The Remedy" from that record peaked at number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second studio album, Mr. A-Z, followed in 2005 and reached number five on the Billboard 200. His work spans a wide range of genres, including pop, alternative rock, jazz, reggae, funk, surf music, blue-eyed soul, and alternative hip-hop. Along the way he picked up the San Diego Music Awards, a Teen Choice Award for Choice Music – Male Artist, a People's Choice Award, and recognition from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Among his most notable industry honors are two Grammy Awards — one for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and one for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals — as well as inclusion in Out100. His second album's top-five placement on the Billboard 200 remains one of the clearest markers of the commercial reach his music has achieved.
