It puts quite a bit of crunch on the producer who is facing a less than abundant year. Producers are sharpening their pencils. Do they need the same amount of nitrogen they have put on before with conditions not looking so favorable?

Across the state we have pretty good stands and it's hanging on. I'm guardedly optimistic about the crop but the longer we go without rain the more pessimistic I get.

Don't write off the crop until you have a chance to scout for cold damage.

Wheat in many areas greened up in January and can no longer be considered dormant.

Most of the wheat, except that in far northwest Kansas, was in the early boot to heading stages of growth at the time of the freezes. Damage can be especially severe if the freeze occurred in the late boot to flowering stages, but wheat can also be injured by a hard freeze at other growth stages.
