Larry McMurtry was an American novelist, screenwriter, and essayist who was born on June 3, 1936, in Archer City, Texas.

McMurtry was educated at the University of North Texas and at Rice University. He wrote in English across all three of his chosen forms — fiction, screenwriting, and the essay — and his career brought him recognition from some of the most prominent institutions in American arts and letters. Among these honors was a Guggenheim Fellowship, awarded in support of his work as a writer.

He also received the Academy Award for Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay, a distinction that placed his contributions to film alongside his literary output. The National Humanities Medal, awarded by the United States government, further marked his standing as a writer working across multiple forms. McMurtry died on March 25, 2021, in Archer City, Texas — the same small town where he had been born more than eight decades earlier.
