Ian Fraser Kilmister was a rock musician, bass guitarist, guitarist, singer, composer, and record producer who worked in English. Born on 24 December 1945 in Burslem and a citizen of the United Kingdom throughout his life, he worked across a range of genres that included rock music, hard rock, space rock, traditional heavy metal, heavy metal music, rock and roll, and speed metal.
Kilmister attended Madeley High School and Ysgol Syr Thomas Jones before pursuing further education at the University of Staffordshire. Those years of schooling preceded a career in which he occupied multiple roles simultaneously — performer, composer, and record producer — spanning the range of genres listed above.
His roles as composer and record producer placed him in a creative capacity that extended beyond performance. As a bass guitarist and guitarist, he worked within musical forms that ranged from rock and roll through to speed metal, and his use of English was the linguistic medium through which his work as a singer and composer operated.
