Lilian Whiting
Lilian Whiting was born on October 3, 1847, in Niagara Falls, in the United States. An American citizen by nationality, she received her education at Shimer College before embarking on a career in which writing in English remained the constant medium of her professional work. Her occupational life encompassed the distinct but related practices of journalism, general writing, and biography.
Across her career, Whiting worked simultaneously as a writer, journalist, and biographer, producing work in English that moved between the demands of periodic journalism and the more sustained research required of biographical writing. These three vocational identities together defined the scope of her output, and she maintained them as overlapping rather than sequential pursuits. Whiting died on April 30, 1942, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel.
