Lilian Whiting was born on October 3, 1847, in Niagara Falls, in the United States. An American citizen by nationality, she received her education at Shimer College before embarking on a career in which writing in English remained the constant medium of her professional work. Her occupational life encompassed the distinct but related practices of journalism, general writing, and biography.

Across her career, Whiting worked simultaneously as a writer, journalist, and biographer, producing work in English that moved between the demands of periodic journalism and the more sustained research required of biographical writing. These three vocational identities together defined the scope of her output, and she maintained them as overlapping rather than sequential pursuits. The combination placed her among those American women of her era who worked across multiple literary forms within a single professional life.

Whiting died on April 30, 1942, at the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. Her death at that address marked the close of a career that had begun in the latter decades of the nineteenth century and extended well into the twentieth. She had spent that career writing in English as a journalist, writer, and biographer, beginning from her origins in Niagara Falls and concluding nearly ninety-five years after her birth.

No one has success until he has the abounding life. This is made up of the many-fold activity of energy, enthusiasm and gladness. It is to spring to meet the day with a thrill at being alive. It is to go forth to meet the morning in an ecstasy of joy. It is to realize the oneness of humanity.
