Margaret Hilda Thatcher was born on 13 October 1925 in Grantham. She attended Kesteven and Grantham Girls' School before going on to Somerville College for her university education. She later trained in law at City Law School, building a formal grounding that would serve her across a varied professional life.

Her working life spanned an unusually wide range of roles. She worked as a research scientist and chemist before qualifying as a barrister, and she also took on the role of business executive at various points in her career. Alongside these pursuits, she moved into public life as a politician and statesperson, and she later turned to autobiography as well. Throughout all of this she was a citizen of the United Kingdom, working in English.

The honours she received reflect the scope of her public life. She was appointed to the Order of the Garter and received the Order of Merit. She also received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, marking her standing beyond the borders of the United Kingdom.

Thatcher died on 8 April 2013 at The Ritz London.
