The late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries saw the Scottish National Party grow from a persistent minority force into a party of government, reshaping the terms of Scottish political life. Michael William Russell was born on 9 August 1953 in Bromley and would become one of the figures who worked within that transformation across several distinct professional spheres.

Educated at Marr College and later at the University of Edinburgh, Russell built a career that moved between television and politics. He worked as a television director and producer, and also as a writer of non-fiction, producing work in English across these overlapping fields. This range of activity distinguished him from colleagues whose careers ran along a single track, and his literary output sat alongside, rather than apart from, his political commitments.

His parliamentary record spans more than two decades. Russell served as a list Member of the Scottish Parliament for the South of Scotland from 1999 to 2003, and again from 2007 to 2011, before representing Argyll and Bute as a constituency MSP from 2011 until 2021. During those years he served in the Scottish Cabinet under both Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon, giving him sustained experience at the senior level of devolved government. Throughout this period he remained a member of the Scottish National Party.

Since 2024, Russell has served as Chairman of the Scottish Land Commission, a role that places him at the intersection of public policy and land governance in Scotland. It is a concrete institutional position that reflects the breadth of his public career, extending from the television studio and the written page to the floor of the Scottish Parliament and into the governance structures of devolved Scotland.
