Mike Crapo was born to Dean and Jeanette Crapo in Beardstown, Illinois. He moved with his family to Idaho at an early age and grew up on a farm near Heyburn, Idaho. After completing high school, he attended Brigham Young University (BYU) for a time before transferring to Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho.

Crapo earned his bachelor's degree from BYU in 1972. He then moved to the United Kingdom to serve as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning to the U.S., he studied law at Creighton University School of Law and later obtained his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree.
