In the final years of his life, Miyamoto Musashi completed The Book of Five Rings, a work on strategy and swordsmanship that he wrote in Japanese and that remains one of the most recognized texts associated with his name.

Born on January 1, 1584, in Harima Province, Japan, Musashi went on to work across a striking range of disciplines. He was a samurai and rōnin, a swordfighter and strategist, and also a bushi in the broader martial tradition of his time. His life wasn't confined to the battlefield or the dojo, though. He also worked as a writer, a painter, a calligrapher, and a philosopher, pursuits that show the breadth of his engagement with Japanese culture and thought. That combination — martial practice alongside artistic and intellectual work — defined much of what he produced during his lifetime.

Musashi died on June 5, 1645, at Reigandō. He was sixty-one years old. The Book of Five Rings, which he authored, stands as the concrete work most directly tied to his name and has carried his ideas about strategy and combat well beyond his own era. It's the one text the record firmly places in his hands, and it's the clearest anchor to his legacy as both a practitioner and a thinker. Whatever else shaped his decades of activity as a swordfighter and strategist, it's that book, written in his own language and completed near the end of his life, that gives readers today the most direct access to how Musashi understood his craft.
