Nassim Nicholas Taleb was born on September 12, 1960, in Amioun, Lebanon, holding citizenship in both Lebanon and the United States. His early education took place at the Grand Lycée Franco-Libanais, a formation that set him on a path through multiple academic institutions and intellectual traditions. He went on to study at Paris Dauphine University and later at the Wharton School, a transatlantic educational arc that corresponds to the range of languages he uses: English, French, Arabic, Levantine Arabic, Spanish, and Italian.

His professional identities are numerous and span fields that do not always sit comfortably together. He works as a mathematician, statistician, philosopher, economist, essayist, writer, stockbroker, and university teacher — a breadth that gives his output an unusual cross-disciplinary character.
