Norman Yoshio Mineta was born on November 12, 1931, in San Jose, California. A United States citizen who used English, Mineta attended San Jose High School before pursuing higher education at the University of California, Berkeley, where he was associated with Bowles Hall and completed studies at the Haas School of Business.

Mineta worked as a politician across a career that brought him a number of formal distinctions. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, as well as the Wright Brothers Memorial Trophy and the L. Welch Pogue Award for Lifetime Achievement in Aviation. He was also awarded the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Rising Sun, a Japanese decoration. Together these honors span American government recognition and international acknowledgment of his public work.

Norman Mineta died on May 3, 2022, in Edgewater. The Library of Congress records his name in its authorized form as "Mineta, Norman Yoshio, 1931–2022."
