American comedy in the mid-twentieth century saw performers working across an expanding range of platforms, from television variety shows to stage productions, and it was within that broad entertainment landscape that a distinct generation of comedic voices found their footing. Phyllis Diller was one of those voices.

Born on July 17, 1917, in Lima, Ohio, Diller attended Lima Senior High School, Lima Central Catholic High School, Bluffton University, and the Sherwood Community Music School. She went on to work as a stand-up comedian, actress, and comedian across film, television, stage, and voice acting — a range of formats that placed her in front of cameras, microphones, and live audiences throughout her career as a United States citizen working in the English language.

Her television work included the sketch comedy series Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In, which stands among her notable credits. Alongside that, she worked as a film actor, a stage actor, and a voice actor, giving her a presence across the major performance formats of her era. That combination of stand-up comedy and acting in multiple mediums defined the shape of her professional life.

Recognition came from several quarters. Diller received the Golden Apple Award, the Lucy Award, Laurel Awards, and American Comedy Awards, and she was honored by the San Diego International Film Festival. She earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame — a connection back to the state where she was born and educated. She died on August 20, 2012, in Brentwood, California, with those honors on record.
